If you want to take years off of your face but don’t want the recovery period that comes with a more invasive surgical facelift, you could get the results you want with Polydioxanone (PDO) threads. At Serenity Facial Aesthetics and Spa, our providers recommend this treatment to tighten and lift your skin with minimal downtime.
What are PDO Threads?
PDO thread lifts use dissolvable surgical sutures to rejuvenate your skin, lift and support your face, and restore volume. During the treatment, these tiny threads are passed beneath the surface of your skin to contour areas affected by aging for an immediate natural-looking lift.
There are three types of PDO threads that work in different ways to rejuvenate your skin:
- PDO mono threads: These smooth threads are used to stimulate collagen production, making some effects of your lift last after the threads have dissolved.
- PDO screw threads: If you want to address a sunken appearance, these intertwined threads restore volume to your face.
- PDO cog threads: Micro-extensions (sometimes called “barbs”) on cog threads can instantly lift and support your skin.
Is a Thread Lift Dangerous?
Thread lifts are a low-risk treatment that can be performed safely by a trained provider like those at Serenity Facial Aesthetics and Spa. Because PDO thread lifts are so minimally invasive, recovery time is generally two weeks or less.
Immediately following the treatment, you might see slight bruising, swelling, or redness, but the risk of severe bruising or bleeding (like you might see with a traditional facelift) is virtually nonexistent. Your provider will discuss aftercare instructions to ensure your short recovery goes smoothly.
Additionally, PDO threads have been used in surgeries since the 1980s and are designed to safely dissolve on their own.
How is a Thread Lift Different from a Traditional Facelift?
Thread lifts and surgical facelifts will both give you a more youthful appearance, but they do produce different results. Thread lifts are much less invasive than traditional facelifts, which have a recovery time of four to six weeks. They're also more cost-effective than facelifts.
A surgical facelift is a longer-lasting option. It’s often preferred by those who have more advanced signs of aging or who want a procedure that lasts multiple years.
PDO thread lifts can address similar issues like lines and wrinkles, sagging or sunken skin, and loss of contour. However, the results might be more subtle than a surgical facelift – a result many of our clients prefer!
How Long Does it Last?
PDO threads will dissolve after four to six months, but people generally enjoy their results for much longer. PDO threads do more than provide an immediate lift. Because they also stimulate collagen production, you can generally expect to enjoy the benefits for up to 18 months.
