Advancements in technology have made laser resurfacing an effective method to improve skin health and appearance. Using focused light energy, laser treatments address issues such as acne scars, aging signs, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, scars, and effects of poor nutrition. These treatments are safe, efficient, and typically require minimal downtime while delivering noticeable results.

Laser resurfacing is far less invasive than traditional dermabrasion or chemical peels. It removes damaged skin layers and rejuvenates the complexion. Though commonly performed on the face, laser resurfacing can also be applied to other areas of the body.

Reasons for Laser Resurfacing

Patients choose laser resurfacing for various aesthetic concerns, including:

  • Reducing or eliminating wrinkles and stretch marks
  • Diminishing scars
  • Rejuvenating skin that has not responded to facelifts
  • Removing age spots and spider veins
  • Repairing sun-damaged skin
  • Improving uneven skin tone caused by melasma or other factors
  • Removing warts or birthmarks
  • Shrinking enlarged pores
  • Eliminating tattoos

Types of Laser Resurfacing

Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Ablative lasers penetrate deeply, removing a layer of skin and creating a controlled wound. This process delivers dramatic results with fewer sessions but requires a longer healing time.

Non-Ablative Resurfacing

Non-ablative lasers do not remove skin layers but stimulate collagen production and tighten underlying tissue. This gentler approach has less downtime but may need more sessions and offers subtler improvements.

Non-ablative treatments are generally recommended for less extensive repairs and are preferred for people of color to minimize risks of pigmentation changes.

Fractional ablative laser resurfacing is a hybrid approach targeting precise small skin areas with microbeams. It offers noticeable results with less downtime than traditional ablative methods, often providing a balance between efficacy and recovery.

The Laser Resurfacing Procedure

Laser resurfacing is usually performed in-office under topical anesthesia. Treatment duration ranges from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size and location of the area. Some patients see significant improvement after just one session, especially with ablative lasers, but multiple treatments are often needed to reach optimal results. Occasional touch-ups may be recommended later.

Risks of Laser Resurfacing

Though generally safe, laser resurfacing carries potential risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Redness
  • Changes in skin pigmentation
  • Acne flare-ups
  • Milia (small white bumps)

Recovery from Laser Resurfacing

Non-Ablative Laser Recovery

Patients may experience redness and peeling lasting several days. Ice packs can reduce discomfort and swelling. Normal activities can continue during healing, and makeup may be used to conceal any temporary discoloration.

Ablative Laser Recovery

Post-treatment skin may be raw, swollen, itchy, and weep yellowish fluid that forms crusts. A thick ointment and protective dressing are applied, with instructions to keep the head elevated if the face was treated. Ice packs and pain relievers help ease symptoms. Picking at crusts is discouraged to avoid scarring. Healing typically takes one to two weeks.

During recovery, patients should avoid strenuous activity and regularly clean the area with water, saline, or diluted acetic acid to promote healing. Some prefer to stay home until the skin is well on its way to healing. After new skin forms, cosmetics can hide residual redness, which may last for months. Once fully healed, the skin appears tighter, smoother, and more evenly toned.
