Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable treatment designed to counteract facial volume loss that naturally occurs with aging. By stimulating the body’s collagen production, Sculptra gradually restores volume and smooths out shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds—particularly those that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). It is not intended for use around the eyes or lips.
The primary ingredient in Sculptra Aesthetic is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic alpha hydroxy acid that is biocompatible (safe for use in the body) and biodegradable (naturally broken down by the body over time). PLLA has been safely used for over two decades in various medical applications, including dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants, making it a trusted and effective option for long-lasting facial rejuvenation.

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating nasolabial folds, Sculptra® Aesthetic is considered a safe and effective solution for most individuals seeking facial rejuvenation. Unlike fillers that offer immediate results, Sculptra works gradually, encouraging natural collagen production for a more subtle, youthful, and natural-looking improvement.
Although only FDA-approved for nasolabial folds, the manufacturer, Valeant Aesthetics, notes that Sculptra can also be used to treat marionette lines (at the corners of the mouth) and chin wrinkles. Because Sculptra contains no animal, human, or bacterial components, allergy testing is not required prior to treatment. With minimal downtime, most patients are able to resume their normal activities right after the procedure.
Treatment and Results of Sculptra® Aesthetic Facial Injectable
Sculptra is typically administered as a series of injections, with up to four sessions spaced approximately three weeks apart. Once injected into shallow or deep facial lines and folds, the treatment stimulates collagen production, gradually restoring volume and smoothing the skin.
Individual results may vary, but clinical studies have shown that the effects of Sculptra can last up to two years in many patients, making it a long-lasting option for facial volume restoration.
Side Effects of Sculptra® Aesthetic Facial Injectable
Common side effects are generally mild and temporary, and may include tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, discomfort, or localized bleeding at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within a few days but may occasionally last longer.
According to Valeant Aesthetics, other potential side effects include the formation of small, palpable lumps beneath the skin, particularly when pressing on the treated area. In rare cases, larger lumps may appear, sometimes with delayed onset, and may be accompanied by inflammation or skin discoloration.
