Age spots—also called brown spots, liver spots, or solar lentigines—are a common sign of aging. These flat, oval patches of pigmentation typically develop on areas of the body frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, shoulders, and feet. Most often seen in people over 40, age spots can vary in size from small freckles to more than half an inch across, and their color ranges from light brown to black. When clustered together, they can appear even larger.
Request an AppointmentWhat Causes Age Spots
Age spots most commonly develop from prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, they can also result from the use of tanning beds or lamps, skin trauma or injury, and genetic factors. Individuals with lighter skin tones and those with a history of frequent sunburn or significant sun exposure are more prone to developing age spots.
Diagnosing Age Spots
True age spots are benign and generally don’t require treatment. However, if a spot appears irregular, a biopsy may be recommended to rule out skin cancer. You should consult a physician if a spot has any of the following characteristics:
- Very dark pigmentation
- Unusual or varied colors
- Rapid growth in size
Additionally, spots that itch, bleed, become red or tender should also be evaluated for potential malignancy.
Treatment Options
Although age spots are harmless, many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons. Available treatment options include:
- Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen)
- Topical bleaching creams
- Microdermabrasion
- Laser skin resurfacing
- Chemical peels
Because treatment is cosmetic, it is typically not covered by insurance.
Preventing Age Spots
To reduce the risk of developing age spots—or to prevent existing ones from worsening—minimize sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Wearing UV-protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat can also help safeguard your skin.
